Hello, game-changer! I made these last week, when we had a tent space and served all plant-based snacks and appetizers at the United States Naval Academy vs. St Johns College croquet match. It’s a fun rivalry between the two schools, and people usually host little get-togethers while the croquet match is on. We had a lot of fun with friends and midshipmen stopping by our tent, and I was wracking my brain for the longest time, figuring out what to make. It had to be easy, hold for a few hours, and something you could eat at room temperature or hot.

I discovered a recipe for vegan green jackfruit pulled “pork” carnitas tacos one day, and I made them a while back. SO. GOOD. I then thought how similar the green jackfruit (NOT to be confused with ripe, yellow jackfruit) was to pulled pork in texture, that it would be so easy to just pour some barbeque sauce into a whole bunch of it, slap it on some buns, and serve these BBQ jackfruit sandwiches at the croquet match.

You’ve GOT to make these. Everything you love about pulled pork sandwiches is in THIS sandwich, minus the pork! The texture, tang, and savoriness of this pulled green jackfruit is a serious winner. My hubby, P, and friend, Justin, had four of these sandwiches. EACH (I stopped counting). I even gave some to random people at the croquet match, and they said they were the best pulled pork sandwiches ever. I would say, “Oh by the way, they’re vegan! Made with green jackfruit!” No one knew what green jackfruit was, but I helped open minds that day!

Instructions
  1. In a French oven, heat the extra-virgin olive oil over medium heat, until hot.
  2. Add the onion, pulled jackfruit, and garlic; stir and saute for about 5 minutes until onion begins to soften.
  3. Add the barbeque sauce, sesame oil, tamari, and crushed red chili flakes. Mix until incorporated. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover with lid, and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir to incorporate ingredients again; serve with hoagie buns, and garnish with thinly sliced green onion, cilantro, and fried shallots, as desired.
